What you’re looking at.

This is a reference yield for U.S. Treasury debt around a 2-year maturity. A yield is a percentage, not the dollar price of a bond. One basis point is 0.01 percentage point.

Why it matters.

Longer-maturity yields help frame the cost of borrowing over time. They also matter to bond valuations: all else equal, fixed-rate bond prices fall when market yields rise.

What this number cannot tell you.

This benchmark yield is not a guaranteed offer available to every investor or the return of a bond fund. The price you pay, holding period, reinvestment, and taxes affect your outcome. Even Treasury prices can fall before maturity.

A question worth asking.

How does the timing of my bond holdings fit the timing of my spending, and what happens if rates change?
