Understanding the benchmark

What does this index mean?

The S&P 500 brings together leading large U.S. companies in one measure. It gives more influence to companies with a larger market value of publicly available shares. Its level is expressed in index points, not the cost of buying a portfolio.

Why should I care?

This is a common reference for the large-company stock portion of a portfolio. Seeing it alongside small companies, sectors, and bonds helps explain why your own investments may have a different experience.

What it leaves out.

It does not cover every U.S. company, bonds, or the full global economy. Large constituent weights can make the index rise even when many of its companies fall. A balanced portfolio is not designed to match an all-stock index every day.
